Cultural and Structural Challenges to Competency-Based Medical Education

Medical and other health professions educational programs are increasingly adopting competency-based education (CBE) frameworks, which align training with the needs of patients and populations. CBE represents a promising solution to reform the education system, elevating learner agency via individualized, flexible learning pathways and authentic, real-world assessments to facilitate competency attainment. However, such reform requires careful examination of organizational culture and structures to ensure a truly developmental ethos. Many attempts at implementing CBE fail due to a lack of adjustment in the local learning environment. This webinar highlights efforts across the continuum of UME, GME and into practice that address system and organizational issues for the successful implementation of CBME.
