Pertussis: Trends, Treatment and Prevention
What are the signs and symptoms of pertussis (whooping cough)? What should you do when you suspect a patient has pertussis? How can pertussis be prevented? Join panelists from AMA and CDC, as they provide updates on the current epidemiology of pertussis outbreaks, signs and symptoms of infection, and prevention strategies, including the importance of the whooping cough vaccine to reduce severe infection in children. We will also discuss infection prevention and control recommendations and post-exposure prophylaxis guidelines.
Kimberley Fox, MD, MPH
Kimberley Fox, MD, MPH, is the director of the Division of Bacterial Diseases (DBD) within CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD). Prior to her appointment, Dr. Fox served as deputy director of DBD from 2018 to 2020. As director, Dr. Fox is responsible for oversight and direction of the division’s efforts to reduce illness and death from vaccine-preventable and other bacterial respiratory pathogens and meningitis, including meningococcal and pneumococcal disease, diphtheria, pertussis, and Legionella.

Hannah G. Rosenblum, MD
Hannah G. Rosenblum, MD, is a medical officer in the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). She earned her MD from Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completed her combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residency at Yale School of Medicine, where she also served as Chief Resident in Yale Primary Care/Internal Medicine. She joined CDC in 2020 as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer. Dr. Rosenblum continues to care for patients at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Mercy Care.

David T. Kuhar, MD
David T. Kuhar, MD, is a medical officer in the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion (DHQP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He received his MD from Emory University and completed his internship/residency at New York University Medical Center. He completed a fellowship in infectious diseases at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York and is board-certified in internal medicine and infectious diseases. He currently serves as the Director for the Office of Healthcare Worker Safety and lead for the Hospital Infection Prevention team in DHQP.

Toluwalasé (Lasé) A. Ajayi, MD
Toluwalasé (Lasé) A. Ajayi, MD, is an experienced community pediatrician, adult and pediatric palliative medicine physician, and clinical translational researcher. In June 2022 she was elected to the American Medical Association Board of Trustees. Dr. Ajayi emigrated from Nigeria to the U.S. at the age of seven as a political refugee, growing up in Lawrence, Kan. She earned her medical degree from the University of Kansas, completed her pediatric residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center, and further specialized in adult and pediatric palliative medicine at the Institute for Palliative Medicine at San Diego Hospice.
Currently, Dr. Ajayi holds a joint faculty position as a clinical professor at UC San Diego in both the departments of pediatrics and medicine. She is also the program director for the UC San Diego and Scripps Health Palliative Medicine Fellowship program. Her translational research is conducted at the Joan & Irwin Jacobs Center for Health Innovation, where she leads initiatives on digital health equity.
Clinically, Dr. Ajayi practices at Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego as a newborn hospitalist and home-based physician for medically fragile children and serves as the interim chair of the Division of Pediatric Palliative Care. Additionally, she is an adult palliative medicine consultant at UC San Diego Health.
Dr. Ajayi’s research intersects innovative digital medicine technologies with unmet needs in health disparities, maternal fetal health, pain and palliative medicine. She has been actively involved with the NIH’s All of Us Research Program, the Palliative Care Research Cooperative, and was the principal investigator for PowerMom, a study exploring how mobile health technologies can optimize pregnancy outcomes through real-time, patient-reported data.
