Integrating routine screening for infectious diseases such as HIV and viral hepatitis into care for patients with a substance use disorder (SUD) can help identify infections and improve patient health. In this webinar, Sandra Springer, MD, will discuss strategies that are tailored to improve infectious disease prevention, screening, and treatment for people with SUD.
Sandra Springer, MD
Sandra Springer, MD, is a Professor of Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine, Section of Infectious Diseases at the Yale School of Medicine. She received her B.A. from Harvard College, her M.D. from U of Massachusetts Medical School and completed her Internal Medicine Residency and Infectious Disease Fellowship at Yale School of Medicine. She is Board-Certified in Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases and Addiction Medicine. She is also an attending physician at the Veterans Administration Connecticut Healthcare System and the Director of the Infectious Disease Clinic at the Newington site of the VA in CT. Her clinical research lab focuses on the integration of substance use and infectious diseases with a focus on opioid use disorder treatment and the treatment and prevention of HIV infection in people who use drugs.

Erica Kaufman West, MD
Erica Kaufman West, MD, completed her undergraduate degrees at Valparaiso University in Indiana. She received her medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine. She finished her Internal Medicine residency and her chief resident year at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. She stayed to complete her fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the West LA VA/Cedars-Sinai/Olive View-UCLA Medical Center program. She has been working in the Midwest since then, focusing on acute inpatient as well as outpatient care in HIV, Hepatitis C and wound care. She now works as the AMA’s Director of Infectious Diseases while maintaining her clinical practice.
