Overcoming Infection Prevention and Control Challenges in Rural Health Care
This webinar explores challenges in infection prevention and control (IPC) in rural health care settings. Many rural health care facilities have limited staff and limited access to specialists. We will talk to health care professionals who work closely with Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs), Rural Emergency Hospitals (REHs), and Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) in rural areas to close the divide between urban and rural IPC outcomes.

Ylinne Lynch, MD, MS, got her medical degree from Wayne State University in Michigan. She did her Internal Medicine residency at the University of Colorado, Denver. Her Pulmonary/Critical Care fellowship was at the University of Washington, where she then got a master’s degree in epidemiology.

Liza Rosenman, MD, is an Associate Professor and the Director of Simulation in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Michigan. She has 13 years of experience in simulation-based teaching and assessment. For the past 5 years she has been leveraging simulation to improve Infection Prevention and Control practices and currently has funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, through Project Firstline, to integrate simulation and experiential learning into IPC education.

Alisha Sheffield, MSN, RN, CIC, graduated from UNMC’s College of Nursing and began her work as a nurse in the Operating Room and perioperative area. Her work at this surgical center progressed into running the Infection Prevention program with a focus on disinfection and sterilization. She joined the Nebraska Medicine Infection Prevention team in 2016 and served as the liaison for the ambulatory clinics, high level disinfection, procedural and inpatient areas. She earned a Master's of Science in Nursing at Clarkson College.

Erica Kaufman West, MD, completed her undergraduate degrees at Valparaiso University in Indiana. She received her medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine. She finished her Internal Medicine residency and her chief resident year at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. She stayed to complete her fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the West LA VA/Cedars-Sinai/Olive View-UCLA Medical Center program. She has been working in the Midwest since then, focusing on acute inpatient as well as outpatient care in HIV, Hepatitis C and wound care. She now works as the AMA’s Director of Infectious Diseases while maintaining her clinical practice.
