Coaching in Medical Education: Current Practices and New Frontiers
A growing body of evidence links coaching in medical education to improvements in performance, reflective capacity, and resilience. Coaching has evolved from a targeted learner-support strategy to a core component of professional development, competency-based education, and physician well-being. As academic medicine increasingly emphasizes educational outcomes, the need for structured coaching approaches—and rigorous methods to assess coaching effectiveness—has never been greater. This AMA ChangeMedEd® webinar will provide a practical and forward-looking overview of coaching implementation and evaluation across the continuum. The webinar will begin with a brief history of coaching in medical education and its expanding penetration within academic health systems, followed by an overview of three complementary coaching innovations: • Assessing coaching competency through direct observation using a Coaching-Centered Objective Structured Teaching Exercise (OSTE) • Implementing group coaching models in graduate medical education to enhance resident well-being and professional identity formation • Developing an AI-enabled coaching agent to support coaching conversations and competency assessment at scale
