Breaking Research from The Atlas Study Group - Nonmuscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer News
Join Patient Editor Tom Hulsey as he continues his conversation with Dr. Sandip M. Prasad about the recently published findings of The Atlas Group in The Journal of Urology®, Treatment of Low-grade Intermediate-risk Nonmuscle-invasive Bladder Cancer With UGN-102 ± Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumor Compared to Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumor Monotherapy: A Randomized, Controlled, Phase 3 Trial (ATLAS). Mr. Hulsey and Dr. Prasad will be joined by two bladder cancer patients. Donald McNally was an ATLAS patient and will discuss his experience and outcomes thus far with the trial. John Rybka, a member of the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (www.bcan.org), will share his perspective on the importance of this research and the potential for how bladder cancer is treated in the future. Tom Hulsey
Tom Hulsey is the Patient Perspectives Associate Editor of AUANews. He is a prostate cancer and heart disease patient, survivor, and now advocate who is actively involved in the community. He currently serves on the boards at Mary Crowley Cancer Research and ZERO Prostate Cancer and as a research advocate at UT Southwestern. He is the past president of the North Texas Prostate Cancer Coalition and served as a peer reviewer and mentor seven times for the DOD’s Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP). Tom received the 2019 Lauren Beam Philanthropy Award at New York University and the 2023 Jan Klodner Service Above Self Award. He has authored two books, detailing his journey, how mindset was key, and lessons learned. All book sale proceeds are being donated to philanthropic organizations that are making a positive impact on Humankind. Tom is a graduate of the Haslam College of Business at the University of Tennessee, followed by a decades-long career in technology and cyber security. He is a graduate of the FBI Citizens’ Academy, Collin County Criminal District Attorney’s Citizen Prosecutor’s Academy, Texas Department of Public Safety Citizen’s Police Academy, and Plano Citizen’s Police Academy, and member of the Plano Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). Tom is an 11-time IRONMAN®, personally sponsored by Subaru, and 6-time Mountainman Winter Triathlon finisher, personally sponsored by NordicTrack, and was a professional hockey instructor with the NHL’s Dallas Stars organization. He lives in Dallas, TX with his incredibly supportive wife, Lauren. They have two married children and four grandchildren.

Donald McNally was born in Brooklyn, NY. As a boy, he loved going to Ebbets Fields to watch the Dodgers play. After graduating High School, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp where he made Sargent. He served for four years traveling throughout the world. After the Marines, he began his career in the HVAC field. He married, moved to NJ, and raised three children. He retired in 2014 after a 54-year career. He likes to stay active by exercising and maintains a healthy diet. When at home, he enjoys watching news and sports including baseball, football and hockey. He spends most of his time with his children and grandchildren, and still goes to ballgames.

Dr. Prasad is a member of Garden State Urology and serves currently as the director of Genitourinary Surgical Oncology, Vice-Chair of Urology at Morristown Medical Center/Atlantic Health System in New Jersey. He is also a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at Rutgers-NJMS and a Clinical Assistant Professor in Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. Prasad received his undergraduate degree with highest honors from Harvard University, a Masters in Philosophy with distinction from the University of Cambridge, and graduated AOA from the Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Prasad completed his residency at the Harvard Program in Urology and an SUO fellowship at the University of Chicago. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters and serves as an associate editor or editorial reviewer for nine specialty journals in Urology. He served as the study-wide PI for the ATLAS clinical trial.

John Rybka is a retired Federal employee, who spent 37 years with the Federal Aviation Administration in Washington D.C. Schooled at the George Washington University and specialized in finance, John continues to apply his education and experience in his volunteer service with his local municipal government and several nonprofit organizations around Central Ohio. John is married with three adult children, and loves spending time spoiling his five young grandchildren. John’s bladder cancer was accidentally discovered during a surgery for a partial colectomy in 2011. He had his first TURBT that following week; non-invasive, low-grade, papillary urothelial carcinoma. John experienced recurrences in 2013, 2014, and 2015. After the third recurrence, he underwent BCG treatments, and there’s been no evidence of disease since. Annual surveillance is ongoing. John credits his hope and resiliency to his wife, Janice. “She’s been my pillar of strength, who never left my side throughout my journey.”
