Bringing the IPC Message Home in Long-Term Care Facilities
With patients staying for longer periods of time and often having medical complexities, post-acute long-term care facilities face unique IPC challenges. Join us for a discussion of how to approach some of these challenges, including preparing for infection outbreaks, talking with patients loved ones about infectious disease concerns and promoting prevention through vaccination. Different facility types have different infection prevention and control (IPC) challenges and needs, and IPC experts are not always readily available. Yet IPC is everyone’s responsibility and is expected as standard of care.

Margaret Fitzpatrick, MD, is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Fitzpatrick is an Infectious Diseases physician and researcher at the University of Colorado and the VA Eastern Colorado Healthcare System in Aurora, CO. Her research work studies the epidemiology and prevention of multidrug-resistant organisms and healthcare associated infections in high-risk patients, such as those in rehabilitation and post-acute long-term care.

Leslie Eber, MD, CMD, is board certified in internal medicine and is a certified Medical Director. She has provided medical directorships for both long-term care facilities and hospice and is currently the medical director for multiple facilities. She serves as the chief faculty for Abode Care Partners. Dr. Eber is on the national board of AMDA- The Society for Post-Acute and Long Term Care Medicine, and is a clinical advisor for the AMDA and CDC- collaborative, Moving Needles. Dr. Eber was awarded the AMDA Medical Director of the year for 2021 and has provided expertise for several national initiatives and presented for the ECHO COVID-19 Global Conversations: Vaccine Development, Distribution and Delivery.

                                        Erica Kaufman West, MD
Erica Kaufman West, MD, completed her undergraduate degrees at Valparaiso University in Indiana. She received her medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine. She finished her Internal Medicine residency and her chief resident year at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. She stayed to complete her fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the West LA VA/Cedars-Sinai/Olive View-UCLA Medical Center program. She has been working in the Midwest since then, focusing on acute inpatient as well as outpatient care in HIV, Hepatitis C and wound care. She now works as the AMA’s Director of Infectious Diseases while maintaining her clinical practice.
