Optimize Onboarding in Health Care

Onboarding is a critical step in integrating a new physician into a health care organization and can play a key role in job satisfaction, productivity, and patient care outcomes. Sea Chen, MD, PhD

Dr. Chen is a radiation oncologist who has been in several different practice settings, ranging from the huge (Kaiser Permanente in Northern California), to a small independent practice on the outskirts of Chicago involved in the building of a comprehensive community cancer center from the ground up, and most recently as an employed-physician and medical director of a hospital department (Rush Copley Medical Center). As a clinical leader with an entrepreneurial and engineering background, Dr. Chen has a passion for collaborative efforts in process and quality improvement. Dr. Chen recently stepped back from clinical practice and joined the AMA full-time to take part in its initiatives to support physician practice sustainability.

Jenn Balchunas LPN, MHL, CPC

Jennifer Balchunas is the Director of Clinical Growth for UNC Physicians Network at UNC Health. In this role, she leads two dynamic teams: one dedicated to onboarding new clinicians and teammates, ensuring they embrace the UNC culture, workflows, and efficient use of the EHR to reduce clinician stress and burnout, and another that has revolutionized In Basket support for primary care clinics through a remote solution. Jennifer is a change leader focused on efficiency, optimization, and well-being, with a strong commitment to supporting every teammate during onboarding and building a compassionate care team. Prior to her current role, Jennifer served as the Clinical Implementation Manager for UNC Health, where she developed a highly respected team of clinical coaches providing at-the-elbow EHR support to improve workflow efficiency and compliance with quality improvement measures. She is a Six Sigma Blue Belt with significant experience in quality improvement and operational excellence. Additionally, Jennifer is a Certified Professional Coach with over 25 years of clinical experience, including 17 years as a practicing LPN. She holds a Master's in Health Leadership from Western Governors University and a Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Leadership from Penn State University.
